The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) is deeply concerned with the shutdown of Nation Media Group (NMG) platforms; Daily Monitor, NTV, Spark TV, KFM, Dembe FM, East African Paper, Ennyanda, etc, by the Ugandan state.
The early Sunday morning NMG shutdown according to the information shared via X account formerly Twitter linked to the CDF Gen. Kainerugaba Muhoozi, was carried out on his orders.
This shutdown raises serious un employment concerns of several individual journalists and media practitioners some of whom are UJA members, considering that NMG is their employer.
We feel, NMG shutdown undermines the press freedom under Articles 29(1)(a) and 41 of the Ugandas Constitution, and the gains by the ruling NRM/NRA government as highlighted under its original 10-point program and other development programs.
In the interim, the Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has embarked on the process of seeking an engagement with the Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Oboth-Oboth, Deputy Speaker Rt.Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, ICT Minister Justine Kasule Lumumba, Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Hon. Nobert Mao, UCC ED Hon. Thembo Nyombi, and Gen. Muhoozi, aimed at exploring workable solutions.
UJA is also in advanced stages of championing a joint engagement with all Media Advocating Bodies to jointly address the matter.
